When it comes to injectable wrinkle relaxers, Botox has become the household name for smoothing dynamic facial lines. However, there is a new option that is gaining popularity as an equally powerful, but softer-focused alternative, Dysport.

Both belong to a class of treatments called neuromodulators, and both use a purified form of botulinum toxin type A to temporarily relax the underlying muscles that cause expression lines. However, there are key differences in their molecular structure, spreading behavior, and dosing which might make one better for your particular goals and aesthetic.

What They Have in Common:

At their core, Botox and Dysport share the same underlying mechanism. When injected into muscles, they temporarily block the acetylcholine, which is the chemical signal that tells those muscles to contract. When the muscle relaxes, the skin resting on top smooths out, significantly softening dynamic wrinkles like frown lines, forehead creases, and crow’s feet.

Both products require virtually zero downtime, and provide temporary results that generally last between 3 to 4 months.

How They Differ:

  1. The Spread: Precision vs. Diffusion

The biggest practical distinction between Botox and Dysport comes down to molecular structure and how that affects its dispersion once injected into tissue.

  • Botox: Botox utilizes a larger, uniform protein complex (900 kDa) around the active molecule. This heavier structure keeps the product localized right where your provider places it. And because it does not spread far beyond the targeted site, Botox is exceptional for precision work, such as treating small, isolated muscle groups around the eyes (crow’s feet) or delicate areas in the lower face where unintended spread could affect your natural smile.
  • Dysport: Dysport features smaller, variable accessory proteins, giving it a higher “diffusion factor”. This means it spreads more fluidly and covers a slightly wider surface area. This broader coverage makes Dysport a favorite for larger treatment zones, like horizontal forehead lines, where a soft, continuous, airbrushed finish is desired.
  1. Onset: How Quickly Results Appear

If you are preparing for an upcoming event, timing can play a major role in your choice.

  • Dysport: Known for a faster onset. Many patients begin seeing noticeable muscle relaxation within 24 to 48 hours, with full results settling in around day 7 to 10.
  • Botox: Tends to take a bit longer to fully integrate. While initial changes may appear in 3 to 5 days, peak results usually show up around 10 to 14 days post-injection.
  1. The Dosage: Units Are Not Created Equal

One of the most common points of confusion for patients is understanding unit pricing. One unit of Botox does NOT equal one unit of Dysport.

Because the molecular formulations differ, the standard conversion ratio is roughly 1 unit of Botox to 2.5–3 units of Dysport.

For example, if a provider typically uses 20 units of Botox to treat frown lines between your brows, they might use roughly 50 to 60 units of Dysport for that same area to achieve an equivalent relaxing effect. While Dysport requires a higher unit count, the price per unit is generally lower, making the overall cost for treating a specific zone roughly equal between the two. Always evaluate treatments by the total cost per area rather than the price per individual unit.

How to Decide Which Option Is Right for You

Choosing between Botox and Dysport is less about deciding which product is objectively “better”, but more about your facial anatomy, the specific area being treated, and your personal timeline. In fact, many skilled injectors frequently use both products on the same patient, opting for Dysport’s broad reach across the upper forehead and Botox’s localized control near delicate areas around the eyes.

Ultimately, the most important variable in any aesthetic treatment is not the brand on the vial, but the expertise of the clinician holding the syringe. That’s why it is so important to schedule a comprehensive consultation with a licensed, experienced injector first, who can evaluate your facial movements in motion and tailor a plan customized specifically for your face.
